Welcome! My name is David Gale (no, that isn't a photo of me. I'm far better looking than that!) and I'm a retired delivery driver now. After nearly half a century of driving all over Britain (and, for a short time, all over Europe too) it's now time to hang up my driving gloves; but I still miss the old days!
At 19, I felt (perhaps naively)ready to take on the world, and I was determined to find the perfect job. When I heard about the opening for a UK delivery driver, I knew it would be the one for me. After all, I had spent my childhood delivering newspapers for the local newsagent, so having the chance to drive the streets of Britain felt like an adventure. Little did I know that my little job was the beginning of a journey that would take me to places I'd never thought possible.
The job was even more exciting than I'd expected. I drove all over the country, getting to know the roads and people. I remember the sun setting over the hills of Scotland and the beautiful countryside of Wales. I was fascinated by the stories people told me of their lives and the places I visited; it was like a journey through time.
I could never have imagined then how much this job would mean to me. It took me to places I'd never been and I made friendships that have endured through the years. Being a delivery driver gave me the chance to see a different side of life and it changed me forever. The job didn't just bring me joy and fullfil my need for exploration, it also brought me wisdom. I got to meet people from all walks of life; from the elderly lady who wanted help getting her groceries delivered to her doorstep to the shopkeeper who shared stories from his past and the fellow drivers I learned so much from.
Each journey I took, I learned something new. And it was those experiences that made me realise that life is about taking one step at a time and enjoying the ride.
Until now, I'd never thought of being a delivery driver as much more than just a job. But as I look back on my time behind the wheel, I can't help but feel grateful for the extraordinary experience it gave me. And now, after years of driving, I still feel the same curiosity that I did when I first started. With each new job I take on, I still marvel at the challenge of delivering a package to its destination. I never tire of the thrill of being on the road and the promise of adventure it brings.
If you'd like to get in touch for any reason I'd love to hear from you, if only to swap memories of The East Lancs Road, Shap Fell and the early days of the M6! My email address is davidg {{at}} courierweb.co.uk (sorry about obscuring the address but if you knew what garbage a proper email address brings from idiots, spammers and fraudsters I'm sure you'll understand).
